Howden has recently secured an order with North Wales Road Authority to supply Jet Fans for the Conwy Tunnel as part of an upgrade to the tunnel. The Conwy Tunnel, the UK’s first immersed tube tunnel, was built during the 1980’s and opened by The Queen in 1991.

Howden has over 70 years' experience in the tunnel industry. Every fan is designed and manufactured to the highest quality standards for assurance of safe and reliable operation. The primary function of the Jet Fans, being installed in the Conwy Tunnel, are for smoke extract in the event of a fire.

In addition, these Jet Fans will be installed with Howden Uptime, a unique digital solution for gathering and analysing fan data on a real-time basis. Howden Uptime will allow the transport workers to remotely monitor the vibration and temperature of the fans in the tunnel, whilst maintaining the flow of traffic.

This is a huge step forward from the current manual method which involves stopping traffic access to the tunnel. The workers will not only be able to monitor the fan data, they will also get an insight into the health of the fans to be able to accurately predict when maintenance is required.
