Howden engineers at wastewater plant

Howden has been awarded a long-term service agreement to provide maintenance services on aeration blower systems at various wastewater and water treatment plants in Cape Town, South Africa.

Cape Town is South Africa’s second most populous city after Johannesburg, providing water and sanitation services to over 4.7 million people. Cape Town is growing rapidly due to population growth and migration to the city, which means they require these wastewater treatment works upgrades and maintenance to clean the water and make it safe before discharging it into the environment.

A modern wastewater treatment plant requires the movement of large volumes of air at low pressure and Howden products provide a reliable source of air for its key process.

The City of Cape Town needed a company to provide a complete contract solution; service and spare parts directly from the OEM. This covers approximately 18 plants within the city, with a total of 22 Howden SG turbo blowers and 57 Positive Displacement blowers, with the PD blowers being a mixture of Howden and non-Howden equipment.

Howden started working with the City of Cape Town in 2014 when we installed the first set of retrofitted turbo blowers. As part of our service offerings and support we have shared our operational knowledge and expertise with each of the plants’ personnel throughout the period of 2014 to 2017 to ensure best practice and optimal operation.

When the service contract tender was published in 2021, Howden was quick to submit a bid.

We were confident in our bid proposal. Howden has a long history of experience and expertise with aeration systems and blower technology, and being the OEM, the spare parts are supplied directly from us and not through a third party. Combining this with the local support available in Cape Town made us a strong contender for the service contract.

The Howden team has the opportunity, the ability and the passion to make a positive, meaningful and sustainable contribution to the world we all live in.

Robert van der Molen, Aftermarket Manager

The service agreement will cover maintenance on all machines; from mechanical and electrical, to control and instrumentation. This includes all spare parts we will utilise during the service and/or any other call-out or breakdowns that may occur during the period of the agreement.

“We are delighted we have won the service agreement,” says Robert, “we look forward to maintaining these machines for the wastewater plants, and ensuring they have the most efficient and reliable aeration system in place to enable a more sustainable future.”
