ULK Group is one of Russia's major sawmill groups and a leader in the timber market producing high quality timber and pellets. ULK has invested and currently constructing one of the world’s largest and modern sawmill facilities and as part of this looking for leading technology suppliers to improve the efficiency and sustainability of their operations.

As part of the mill process, Howden steam turbines will be positioned to support and reduce sawmill waste by converting and reusing its energy. During the burning process, the sawmill biomass waste will be used as fuel to produce steam at 40 bar pressure which will drive the turbine, that in turn drives a generator to produce electricity. The steam produced will condensate in the condenser for the heating of hot water from 95 to 120 °C. Heat will be used for the main technology process.

Howden’s compact and robust Kühnle, Kopp & Kausch (KK&K) steam turbine technology will provide ULK with a reliable waste to energy solution and contribute towards the electrical output required by the plant. Howden will supply and install two stages steam turbines (2 sets) with a total power generation capability of 24 MW in total – 12 MW each.

The steam turbine will also be equipped with Howden Uptime, a solution that monitors, analyses and provides recommendations on the equipment’s performance. Howden Uptime will enhance operational excellence and extend the life of the equipment with the overall aim of reducing total cost of ownership.

This solution will enable ULK to harvest renewable energy as a by-product of their sawmill waste to help power the plant. With our close collaboration with ULK to understand their sustainable goals, our range of reliable and robust steam turbine technology, Howden’s two-stage turbine solution will bring cost savings to the customer as well as environmental benefits by reducing CO2 emissions.
