Howden is delighted to have been awarded the contract for the delivery of a backpressure steam turbine type COMBI (2 x CFR 5 G6a), with a total power output of 6 Megawatt electric. The customer, Ukrainian Company Ukrstarch, are building a new starch production facility and alcohol plant.

The project will realized in 2 stages:
Stage 1: The building of Stapel mallow plant and the installation of one turbine part CFR5. This stage will habe 10 bar(a) backpressure and 3 MW in electric power. The scope of delivery includes a generator and a control system for the whole unit. The whole scope is engineered by Howden.

Stage 2: The building of the alcohol plant and installation of second turbine part CFR5. There will be 6 bar(a) backpressure. Should the customer change their investment plan, they will build the second starch production facility and the steam part of the new CFR 5 will be redesigned accordingly because the steam parameters for alcohol production differ from the steam needed for starch production facility.

Steam Turbine solutions

The provided solution will have several benefits for the customer:

  • Very efficient and flexible solution - there will be nominal turbine efficiency both at 100% load and at 50% load; furthermore the machines will be able to support fluctuating steam demand by factory, by offering the ability to be stopped and started very quickly (since the preheating is not required). The start up time is less than 5 minutes.

  • Save investment for first stage - The customer will pay only for one turbine part CFR 5, 6 MW(e) Generator, control system and engineering for COMBI. The second turbine part CFR5 will be paid once the second stage of the project will be defined, this means that the ordered equipment will be capable of being adjusted as per the changes in Customer’s production, i.e Customer himself is not tied with the delivered equipment.

  • The customer has freedom to select their own investment program for the second stage of plant development (Alcohol Plant or Starch Production facility) during the first stage of project realisation, this flexibility will allow Ukrstarch to review market needs and demands before commiting to exactly the design of the second steam turbine.
