Howden will supply compressors for one of Europe’s largest biofuels facilities, supporting the global energy transition and the shift away from carbon-based fuels.

Royal Dutch Shell plc (Shell) recently announced a final investment decision to build an 820,000-tonnes-per-year biofuels facility at the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, formerly known as the Pernis refinery. Once built, the facility will be among the largest in Europe to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel produced from waste.

A facility of this size is capable of producing enough renewable diesel fuel to avoid 2,800,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year, or the equivalent of removing more than 1 million European cars from the roads. This facility will also help Shell to meet its target of becoming a net-zero emissions energy company by 2050.

Marjan van Loon, President Director of Shell Netherlands BV said: “Shell has been on the road to a lower-carbon future for some time. This investment is an important step as we transform the Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam from a traditional refinery into a sustainable energy park. The project will mean hundreds of millions of dollars of investment each year during construction; it will create hundreds of jobs, and help to maintain the facility’s competitiveness for years to come.”

We are delighted to strengthen our long-standing relationship with Shell and support its plans of making more low-carbon fuels available in the market. This project demonstrates Howden’s leadership in the global compression market and our expertise in the growing sustainable fuel market.
