Green Steel

Greening the steel industry

The steel industry accounts for circa 7% of CO2 emissions globally, making it one of the highest CO2-emitting industries as a result of its use of large amounts of coal. With global steel demand set to increase by around 6% by 2030, greening the steel industry is essential for the world energy transition.

Replacing coal with hydrogen - generated from renewable energy- would make it possible to largely decarbonise the industry. Hydrogen when used in steel making is usually compressed and then stored in large volumes before being used in the steel plants furnaces.

Howden, with over 160 of experience, proudly were selected to provide the compression solutions for the World’s first green steel plant in Sweden.
