Oil production onshore

Products and services across a wide range of upstream oil applications, ensuring consistent, safe and efficient field output

Howden products actively support oil production processes. Well productivity is increasingly important and compression contributes to many methods of enhanced oil recovery either through the injection of gas or CO2.

Associated gas holds substantial value and in response to a reduced flaring environment needs to be processed. This involves multiple compression requirements, such as boosting during separation, cooling gas for dew point control or NGL recovery and recovering off gas within stabilization and fractionation. More stringent environmental controls also mean that storage tank vapours are recovered and compressed for sale or use for onsite power. Where incineration is required, Howden compressors process the gas and fans provide air for combustion.

Comprehensive, Customized Services

Oil and gas exploration and extraction often takes place in extreme climatic conditions, including hot, dry desert, sand and salty atmospheres. Our equipment supports operations in remote and hard to access locations.

Bespoke Packages

Howden offers a set of fluid handling technologies covering ventilation, compression and heat transfer. We provide solutions to many specific challenges met in oil extraction sites and processes. Production needs power, and Howden products enhance the efficiency of gas turbine generators by boosting fuel gas and cooling inlet air.

In-House Expertise

Howden engineering teams and field engineers have access to over 160 years of knowledge, meaning we can offer our expertise at every step of the process from product selection to ongoing support. Our worldwide organisation provides local responsive support to end users and customers.

Oil production map
  • Oil production/EOR Enhanced Oil Recovery

Reinjection of gas (natural or CO2). Used within wellhead facilities to increase gas pressure for injection into the well. Howden has experience in Screw oil-injected solutions for the application.

    • Oil injected screw compressors, API618, Centrifugal comp
  • Oil production/Sour gas injection

Centrifugal compressors typically have dry gas seals to prevent the process gas from escaping. However, the seals leak small amounts of gas that in some cases must be contained. Howden supply recip compressor for the application.

    • API618, Diaphragm
  • Water treatment: Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD)

Brine concentrators are used to treat wastewater by purifying water for reuse and removing impurities.  The brine slurry is concentrated in a crystallizer to produce a dry disposable solid and this can be driven by an MVR process.  Within this process a fan or blower is used to compress steam vapour back to the process at a higher pressure and temperature thereby reducing energy requirements.

    • Turbo fan, Centrifugal blower
  • Oil production/VRU Vapor recovery Unit

Crude oil is stored in pressurized tanks which causes evaporation to occur in the tank.  The vapour is vented from the tank and can be recovered by compressing and processing for use in the fuel system or NGL recovery.

    • Oil injected screw compressors, Oil free screw compressors
  • Oil production/CO2 Gas drying for injection process

PSA mole sieve bed regeneration compressor. Periflow® Compressors ideally integrate gas drying units to regenerate molecular sieve beds (adsorption). Howden solutions are designed to handle various gas mixtures from different wells. Howden deliver reciprocating and peripheral  compressor solutions packaged .

    • Peripheral, API618
  • Air feed for incinerators

    Oil production/Combustion Air for incinerators

    • Centrifugal fan
  • Oil treatment/GOSP Gas-Oil Separation

    • Oil injected screw compressors, Oil free screw compressors
  • Oil treatment/ Stabilization Unit

Prior to storage and shipping of crude oil, the crude is pumped to a stabilization unit.  This unit removes sour gas and lighter gas components to leave a less volatile (stable) heavier grade of crude.  Gases removed from the crude are vented from the top of the stabilization tower and can be compressed for additional uses.

    • Oil injected screw compressors
  • Process cooling

Site utilities/Cooling ACHE Air Cooled Heat Exchanger.

    • Cooling fans
  • DPC & NGL Overhead recovery

After a gas stream has been dehydrated, the gas will still contain natural gas liquids (Ethane, butane, propane, gasoline condensate). Condensate need to be removed prior to exporting into the sales pipeline. Howden deliver propane refrigerant gas screw compressor for LTS Low Temperature Separation process.

    • Oil injected screw compressors
  • Site utilities/Combustion Air for incinerators, Fumes extraction, Aeration

At emergency evacuation points, axial and centrifugal fans provide reliable ventilation in crisis situations. Living quarters overpressure to protect rooms and staircases from hazardous fumes.

    • Centrifugal fans, Axial fans
  • Site utilities/Inert gas systems. Process blanketing (N2)

Howden supply reciprocating compressor package API & ATEX, dry gas compression solutions

    • API618, Piston Vertical
  • Site utilities/ Electricity - fuel gas boosting

Onsite power is often generated using gas turbines fuelled by gas from production processes.  Modern turbines have increasing high pressure feed gas requirements designed to optimize power output.  As available gas pressure is commonly lower than required it is boosted through a compressor prior to the turbine combustion chamber.

    • Oil injected screw compressors
  • Site utilities/Flare gas recovery

Compression of corrosive gas. Off gas streams recovery to avoid well gas exhaust flaring. HC+H2S+CO2+H2O gas. Compression solutions are delivered with compatible materials and protection level defined according to the area classification.

    • API618, Diaphragm, Screw compressors
  • Site utilities/WWTP Waste water treatment

Treating contaminants such are petroleum hydrocarbons, ammonia, and organic sulphur. For mechanical system or diffused aeration system, air supply is needed into the diffuser. Howden supplies air blowers for the application.

    • Single stage blowers
  • Oil production/Injection CCS Carbon Capture and Storage (CO2, and other gases)

CO2 is used to ‘flood’ reservoirs by injection into the wellbore of existing and new wells.  Screw compressor  increase the pressure of CO2 prior to dehydration and injection.  Howden has experience in oil-injected solutions for the application.

    • Oil injected screw compressors
  • Site utilities/ Electricity – turbine inlet air cooling

Gas turbines used for power and compressor drivers can suffer from decreased power output as ambient temperatures increase. A heat exchanger can be used to cool the inlet air down to the desired temperature via a mechanical refrigeration cycle. The liquid refrigerant used is expanded at low pressure in an evaporator and the vapour is then compressed. Heat from the compressed refrigerant is then transferred through condensers back to the evaporator in a continuous cycle.

    • Oil injected screw compressor
  • Water treatment: Mechanical Vapour Recompression (MVR)

Oil sands production using steam assisted gravity drainage creates large volumes of produced water and requires steam for injection.  Evaporators are used to recover the produced water for high quality boiler feedwater and steam generation.  A fan or blower is used to compress steam vapour from the evaporator back to the process at a higher pressure and temperature thereby reducing energy requirements.
