Graduate Recruitment Process

What to expect during the recruitment process

If you are selected for interview, the process will normally involve a few stages. We’ll firstly want to get to know you better and find out more about your degree, your skills and any practical experience you may have. If you are successful, the next stages of the interview process may involve a technical challenge or presentation, as well as the opportunity to meet some of our Howden people.

You will learn more about our business, our values and the opportunities and support offered through the Howden Graduate Programme. It’s a two-way process, so ask questions and get to know us better, as we want you to feel excited about starting your career at Howden.

Some of our current graduates have shared their hints and top tips to help you with the recruitment process.

Researching Howden before applying is my number one tip. Knowing the company background, its values and vision is really beneficial as it means you can tailor your application to demonstrate your understanding and genuine interest in working for the company.

Add a personal touch to your application. Include a section on your personal interests or hobbies to give an idea of what you are like as a person. At Howden we work collaboratively as part of a team, so showing some of your personal side is beneficial.

Be open to working across different business areas. The benefit of a graduate role in Howden is that you gain experience through a wide range of placements in different departments. Using your engineering knowledge and skills in both technical and non-technical roles, and demonstrating your willingness to gain as much experience as possible across the business, will be highly beneficial in the recruitment process.

Try to put interesting and different things on your application that will help it to stand out. This also gives some good points for you to discuss at the interview.

Spend time preparing for the interview and practise talking about the points in your application. Be prepared to talk about anything that is in your application even if it is something that is only mentioned briefly. You might not think it is important, but it may be important to the interviewer.

Make sure to do your research on both Howden and the requirements of the job role and link your skills and experiences to those. Think about why you want to work for Howden and what you can offer.
