Ian Brander is a qualified mechanical engineer (BSc Honours from the University of Strathclyde) and brings technical and leadership knowledge gained during his 28-year career with Howden. Ian took over as global Chief Executive of Howden in August 2011, and was appointed to the Howden Africa Holdings Limited board with effect from 27th July 2011.

Thomas Barwald (48)

Thomas Barwald is a mechanical engineer (Machinebau Techniker, Fachschule fur Technik- Germany) and industrial engineer (REFA Fachmann – Germany) with an MBA in international management (Charles Sturt University – Australia). He relocated from Germany to join Howden Africa in 1990 and was promoted to Operations Director of Howden Power in 1997. The next year Thomas relocated to Australia and was appointed Executive Director of Howden Australia in 1999 and Managing Director in 2002. Thomas also worked as Managing Director of Howden Hua (China) to lead a change-management assignment for 18 months ending December 2008. Thomas is the global Executive Director for the Southern Hemisphere and was appointed to the Howden Africa Holdings Limited board as Chief Executive Officer on 1 January 2009.

After qualifying as a chartered accountant James worked for British Aerospace before joining Howden in 1989. He has served as Finance Director in a number of Howden’s business units and was appointed Group Financial Director for Howden in 2003. James was appointed to the Howden Africa Holdings Limited Board in March 2005

Morongwe Malebye (40)
Independent non-executive director, lead independent non-executive director, chairman of the remuneration, nomination, social and ethics committee.
Morongwe Malebye is a qualified engineer, holding an Industrial Engineering MSc, Mechanical Engineering BSc and an MBA. She has worked in various positions at Eskom, Sasol, Spoornet, Armscor, Babcock Africa and PB Africa.
Morongwe is the director and founder of Ditiropele, a provider of consulting and maintenance services and is a mentor for the Allan Gray Foundation. She was appointed to the Howden Africa Holdings Limited board in November 2007.

Suleman Badat is a chartered accountant and currently operates as an independent consultant, specialising in corporate governance, internal audit and risk management advisory service. He was previously chief risk officer at Sasol Limited and a partner at Arthur Andersen & Co. He sits on several audit and risk committees. Suleman was appointed to the Howden Africa Holdings Limited Board on 21 November 2011.

Kevin Johnson is a qualified CPA (Australia), with a masters degree in accounting (MAcc) from Macquarie University, Australia and an MBA from Hasselt University in Belgium. He is a high-calibre business process engineer with a proven record of developing and implementing Howden Group financial and operational processes globally since he joined the company in January 2001. Kevin was appointed as Chief Financial Officer with effect from 1 March 2012.
