Sturtevant Bearings
Howden North America manufactures Sturtevant sleeve bearings for fans and other rotating equipment. As bearing maintenance and replacement are two of the most critical factors in minimising fan downtime, Howden provides parts and complete bearings manufactured to the original OEM specifications. Shipment within 24 hours can be made from Howden’s inventory of standard bearings.
We manufacture two types of Sturtevant Bearings, self-aligning water cooled (SAWC
) and heavy duty. Both types are available through our bearing exchange program.
The SAWC bearing is a split self-aligning design most commonly cooled with water. Both upper and lower halves of the SAWC bearings have passageways for the cooling medium. If necessary, oil or air can also be used as an alternative to water. The babbitted sleeves have a slightly elliptical bore to ensure a flow of oil over the entire length of the shaft. Excess oil lubricates the thrust faces prior to returning to the bearing sump. The bearings are available in six sizes from 2 15/16” to 8”.
Heavy duty bearings also have a split self-aligning design and babbitted sleeves with a cylindrical bore to provide close control of the oil film. A positive oil disc system provides lubrication during start-up, operation and coast down. The oil both lubricates and cools the journal and thrust surfaces. The heat transfer surface, located in the lower housing half, runs straight through the oil reservoir. No other coolant is needed thus eliminating the possibility of oil contamination. The heat is dissipated as the oil returns to the reservoir. These bearings are available in eight sizes from 3 15/16” to 14”.
Both designs can be provided with a circulating oil system for extra cooling.
Our Bearing Exchange Program is preferable to the use of rebabbitted bearing sleeves. While being less expensive in the short run, the extra maintenance and short life of rebabbitted sleeves makes them less cost effective than using our centrifugally cast replacement sleeves. You can trade in your old ones under our Bearing Exchange Program and earn a rebate on the cost of new OEM sleeves manufactured to our high standards. In the long run this saves money and ensures the dependable operation of your bearings.
