We are pre-eminent in supplying fans and rotary heat exchangers to the power industry, not only for boiler draught but also for emissions control and for the nuclear sector. For the heavy process industries such as iron and steel, cement, petrochemicals and mineral processing, we supply fans, blowers and compressors for process critical applications, able to meet the most arduous demands.
We serve those industries where large-scale ventilation is crucial; providing fans for mining and tunnel ventilation. For the exploitation and processing of oil and gas, our compressors, blowers and fans are used in many specialised and niche applications. Among the environmental industries we serve are wastewater treatment and dust control, though much of our equipment supplied elsewhere is for environmental applications. We adapt our fan designs to meet the precise needs of manufacturers (OEMs) in the transport and defence sectors, and manufacturers of other plant such as roadsweepers.
We are active in virtually every industry requiring gas compression or movement of process air, dirty or otherwise. We do not generally supply the building services and HVAC
markets except in Africa.
Power Generation
Power generation demands the highest levels of performance and reliability. Howden fans, heat exchangers and blowers are no exception to this, operating at peak performance for years between outages. Having been part of the power generation industry since its inception, Howden has supplied over...
Oil and Gas
The oil and gas industry provides a wide range of challenges for rotating plant; extreme temperatures, high humidity, saline atmospheres, and remote locations being just a few. Howden provides high integrity fans, blowers and compressors that are well suited to such conditions and where the highest...
Petrochemicals
The petrochemicals industry provides the widest range of challenges for rotating equipment. Howden fans, compressors and blowers operate in conditions encompassing extreme pressure and temperature, and handle a wide range of gases containing aggressive and toxic components. Demanding...
Chemicals
The demands placed on equipment in the chemical industry are particularly high. Toxic, corrosive and unstable gases are frequently a part of chemical production processes. Maintaining the purity of gases being handled is a priority in the pharmaceutical and biological industries...
Tunnel Ventilation
Vehicle tunnels and metros require ventilation systems that supply a varying air flow to meet changing traffic conditions and which can remain in operation during emergency situations. Howden tunnel ventilation fans perform this task efficiently, reliably and quietly, and are designed to remain...
Iron and Steel
Some of today's most arduous applications for fans and compressors are to be found in the iron and steel industry. The need to move large volumes of air or gas, in many cases at high pressures and high dust burdens, places stringent demands on the mechanical design of the impeller. In ore beneficiation...
Mining
Whilst the normal operational demands placed on mine fans may not be as severe as in other heavy industrial processes, the consequences of malfunction are acute. Howden axial and centrifugal mine ventilation fans are designed first and foremost with safety in mind.
Cement
Modern cement making processes impose a wide range of demands on process fans, including high abrasion, excessive dust build-up, and high temperatures. Howden supplies the many and varied fan types required by the cement industry, ranging from large custom built fans for process critical applications...
Metals and Minerals
From the treatment of ore to the refining and smelting of metals Howden supplies equipment to meet the demanding requirements of the metals and mineral processing industries. Howden products - fans, blowers and turbo-compressors, are found in all sectors from the mine site to smelters and...
Wind Tunnels
Increasing demands for improved vehicle efficiency and comfort, and for lower noise levels require components to be tested in wind tunnels. Since the beginning of the early thirties Howden has been considered as an innovative and competent partner for the supply of wind tunnel fans.
Transport
The transport sector provides many applications which require series-produced fans that operate with high reliability. Howden fans may be found on the latest high-speed rail locomotives, in heavy duty off road vehicles, and in ships.
Sugar Industry
Considerable quantities of heat and power are used in refining sugar and the boiler plant is a vital part of the process. In this demanding application Howden provides fans for the boilers that generate steam both for process heat and turbines that may drive generators and the mill machinery, and...
Pulp and Paper
The pulp and paper industry is heavily energy intensive with both power and heat being essential for production. Boilers may be fuelled by various biomass wastes, black liquor or coal, and the erosive and corrosive exhaust gases present challenges to the associated fan and heat exchanger...
Environmental Industries
As environmental protection becomes increasingly important, Howden equipment plays a significant part in many applications that are of direct environmental benefit on land, air and water.
Defence
Howden is an accredited supplier to the defence industry of several countries, supplying fans and compressors mainly for naval vessels but also for other applications.
Industrial Gases
Howden diaphragm, piston and screw compressors are to be found in a wide variety of applications handling all types of industrial gases. The extent of this is illustrated by the following examples.
Nuclear
Howden supplies highly specialised blower packages for the nuclear industry, and equipment for a number of other applications. Howden is leading the way in developing helium gas circulators for the latest inherently fail-safe pebble bed modular reactors (PBMR).
Other
Howden fans, blowers and compressors are used in a variety of applications throughout industry, ranging from providing air for combustion, process aeration, fermentation, drying, cooling and conveying; for extracting dust or fumes, and for handling any type of unusual gas.
Refrigeration
Howden compressors are at the heart of many refrigeration plants, particularly large installations and those that have demanding or special requirements.
