SX-Series Cooling Fans

Howden SX-Series low-noise cooling fans are used in a wide range of cooling and ventilation systems that must meet strict environmental noise levels.

The Howden SX fan's acoustic output is up to 20 dB(A) lower than comparable conventional cooling fans and in many cases eliminates the need for expensive and bulky sound attenuation equipment.

TheĀ blades have an integral shaft, are positioned on the fan hub-plate by aluminium blade supports and are fastened by U-bolts for simple field assembly and blade pitch adjustment.

Design advantages

  • the SX design reduces fan noise by up to 20 dB(A), compared to standard cooling fans.
  • one-piece fan blade with integral reinforced shaft. This eliminates the concentration of stresses at mechanical joints, which is a major cause of fan failures, and is less sensitive to load variations such as those caused by high winds. This is especially important for low noise applications.
  • less riskĀ of resonance compared to aluminium blades or metal blade parts due to superior dampening properties of the Howden glass fibre reinforced polyester. Fan design life is prolonged to up to 40 years.
  • no need to re-pitch the blades after start-up due to reliable fan software.
  • simple field assembly and individual adjustment of the blade pitch.
  • excellent chemical resistance. (Suitable for cooling towers using brackish water)
  • the SX fan can also be used to increase the capacity of an air-cooler. In such cases, the reduction in fan noise achieved by the SX fan is exploited to increase the air volume going through the air-cooler.

Standard features

  • specially shaped aerofoil designed for ultra-low noise applications for clockwise rotation in the horizontal or vertical plane.
  • fan diameters from 710mm to 10.4m (28in to 34ft)
  • standard operating temperature range from -20 to +65oC (-4 to +149oF).
  • fibreglass reinforced polyester blades with integral blade shaft, adjustable at rest.
  • mild steel, polyurethane coated hub plate with aluminium blade clamping pieces and stainless steel U-bolts, nuts and washers.

Optional features

  • polyurethane leading edge protection for wet cooling tower applications.
  • cast iron, polyurethane coated, coupling flange to suit the mating drive shaft of the bearing set, gearbox or motor, including galvanized bolting.
  • material upgrade for seawater cooling tower applications.
