Case Study: Replacing the stationary matrix design of air preheaters at Shajiao Power Station, with Howden VN preheaters resulted an increase in unit output of 20MW and a payback period of less than 2 years.

Industries

The main applications for the Variax® variable pitch axial flow fan are to be found in the power generation industry, firstly as boiler draught fans, i.e.  Forced Draught (FD) fans, Induced Draught (ID) fans and Primary Air (PA) fans, and secondly as booster fans for Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) applications. Howden has supplied over 3000 fans of this type since it was invented in Denmark in 1951.

The Variax® fan can also be used in mine ventilation applications, in situations where relatively frequent variations in air quantity are required, or where effective reversal of flow is needed in the mine.

The TELLUS axial fan is mainly used for clean-room applications.

Picture of a Chemical Plant Chemicals
The demands placed on equipment in the chemical industry are particularly high. Toxic, corrosive and unstable gases are frequently a part of chemical production processes.  Maintaining the purity of gases being handled is a priority in the pharmaceutical and biological industries...

Iron & Steel SmeltingIron and Steel
Some of today's most arduous applications for fans and compressors are to be found in the iron and steel industry. The need to move large volumes of air or gas, in many cases at high pressures and high dust burdens, places stringent demands on the mechanical design of the impeller. In ore beneficiation...

The petrochemicals industry provides the widest range of challenges for rotating equipment.  Howden fans, compressors and blowers operate in conditions encompassing  extreme pressure and temperature, and handle a wide range of gases containing aggressive and toxic components. Demanding...

Eggborogh Power Station (Photo Courtesy of Scottish and Southern Energy) Power Generation
Power generation demands the highest levels of performance and reliability. Howden fans, heat exchangers and blowers are no exception to this, operating at peak performance for years between outages. Having been part of the power generation industry since its inception, Howden has supplied over...

A wind tunel fan Wind Tunnels
Increasing demands for improved vehicle efficiency and comfort, and for lower noise levels require components to be tested in wind tunnels.  Since the beginning of the early thirties Howden has been considered as an innovative and competent partner for the supply of wind tunnel fans.

Howden Launch Training Academy

Howden has partnered with Glasgow Caledonian University to create Howden Academy – a new international post graduate programme based at the university which will deliver specialist operational training to hundreds of Howden’s engineering graduates from 16 countries over the next few years.
