Case Study: Modifications to incorporate the Howden VN sealing system on the air heaters of West Burton Power Station halved the air leakage, which allowed the station to generate an additional 20 MW from each unit.

Industries

Howden serves utility and industrial markets worldwide.  Wherever large quantities of air need to be moved, or difficult gases compressed, Howden provides the equipment, backed up by extensive applications experience, and the services to ensure optimum operation over the lifetime of the plant.

We are pre-eminent in supplying fans and rotary heat exchangers to the power industry, not only for boiler draught but also for emissions control and for the nuclear sector.  For the heavy process industries, iron and steel, cement, petrochemicals, mineral processing etc, we supply fans, blowers and compressors plant for process critical applications able to meet the most arduous demands.

We serve those industries where large-scale ventilation is crucial; providing fans for mining and tunnel ventilation.   For the exploitation and processing of oil and gas, our compressors, blowers and fans are used in many specialised and niche applications.  Among the environmental industries we serve are wastewater treatment and dust control through much of our equipment supplied elsewhere is for environmental applications.  Manufacturers (OEMs) in the transport and defence sectors are provided with our fans, as are those making roadsweepers.

We are active in virtually every industry requiring gas compression or movement of process air, dirty or otherwise.  We do not generally supply the building services and HVAC markets except in Africa.

As environmental protection becomes increasingly important, Howden equipment plays a significant part in many applications that are of direct environmental benefit on land, air and water.

Industrial Gas Compressor Industrial Gases
Howden diaphragm,  piston and  screw compressors are to be found in a wide variety of applications handling all types of industrial gases. The extent of this is illustrated by the following examples.

Iron & Steel SmeltingIron and Steel
Some of today's most arduous applications for fans and compressors are to be found in the iron and steel industry. The need to move large volumes of air or gas, in many cases at high pressures and high dust burdens, places stringent demands on the mechanical design of the impeller. In ore beneficiation...

Dust Extractor Mining
Whilst the normal operational demands placed on mine fans may not be as severe as in other heavy industrial processes, the consequences of malfunction are acute. Howden axial and centrifugal mine ventilation fans are designed first and foremost with safety in mind.

The oil and gas industry provides a wide range of challenges for rotating plant; extreme temperatures, high humidity, saline atmospheres, and remote locations being just a few. Howden provides high integrity fans, blowers and compressors that are well suited to such conditions and where the highest...

Howden Group HQ Renfrew Other
Howden fans, blowers and compressors are used in a variety of applications throughout industry, ranging from providing air for combustion, process aeration, fermentation, drying, cooling and conveying; for extracting dust or fumes, and for handling any type of unusual gas.
